OUR COMMUNITY
New Market traces it's history back to the early
horse and buggy days of the late 18th century. Founded in 1793
by Nicholas Hall and William Plummer: New Market's location along
the historic National Pike made it a convenient stop for travelers
in need of food, lodging, and services. The high-wheeled, six
horse, Conestoga wagons were frequent visitors on their way to
the Ohio Country and beyond. The eight hotels and taverns lining
Main Street provided travelers with a night's lodging for 25 cents
and a glass of whiskey for 5 cents.
Today's travelers, adventurers, and antique collectors
are welcomed by a Bed & Breakfast Country Inn, fine eating
establishments, and more than 30 antique shops. Registered by
the State of Maryland and by the Department of Interior's National
Register as an historic district, New Market includes the founders'
original plot laid out two full centuries ago. The Old National
Pike through New Market has also recently been granted the classification
as a “Linear national Park.”

SOME OF OUR CATEGORIES OF PRODUCTS
Byers’ Choice
Carolers
In
the late 1960's, Joyce Byers started making what has come to be
known as Byers' Choice Carolers out of her desire to create holiday
decorations that showed a respect for timeless traditions and
her own memories of Christmas. Now a family business, Joyce, her
husband Bob and their two sons work with their team of 180 trained
artisans to create each Byers' Choice Caroler with a unique appearance
and handcrafted quality. Located in Pennsylvania, the Byers' family
continues to handcraft those same creations that started out on
the dining room table many years ago.
Every Caroler is created in the Pennsylvania
workshop by the loving hands of a team of skilled artisans. Although
Joyce still designs each Caroler, it is the following steps which
bring to life the figures that have found their way into people's
hearts.
You
will be dazzled by the display of Carolers at the New Market General
Store.
“No two carolers are ever the same.
Our artisans create a unique character and personality in each
figure by using a variety of techniques and materials. Each crafter
leaves a little bit of him- or her-self in every figure touched.
As many as ten people will work on each Caroler. Consequently,
it is almost impossible to find two Carolers that are exactly
alike.”
~Joyce Byers
Merck Family’s Old World
Christmas
The
New Market General Store brings you a wonderful selection of authentic
handcrafted glass ornaments of unsurpassed beauty, quality and
value from the Merck Family’s Old World Christmas. Carefully
hand-produced in limited quantities, each of these exclusive and
dazzling collectibles is a treasure for you to cherish as a favorite
part of your Christmas celebrations and traditions.
Thanks to the dedication of the Merck Family’s
Old World Christmas, the century-old art of creating glass Christmas
ornaments has been revived. Each beautiful glass ornament is tediously
mouth-blown, one at a time, into a finely crafted porcelain mold.
Once the ornament has been removed from the mold and cooled, a
hot solution of liquid silver is poured inside. Then the ornament
is delicately hand-painted with many brightly colored lacquers.
Finally, the long stem is cut and the cap is attached. An heirloom
is born!
The Merck Family’s Old World Christmas
is your guarantee of authentic glass ornaments. Extraordinary
attention to every detail results in the remarkable quality of
these ornaments. Each ornament is produced in limited numbers
exclusively for the Merck Family’s Old World Christmas.

to enhance your home or office, and you appreciate quality and
long-lasting value, you've found the perfect line of candles.
Our Beanpod Candles are made right here
in America's Heartland from 100% stabilized soy wax, which provides

and brilliant color. Most soy candles are actually a blend of
soy wax and paraffin (sometimes as much as 75% paraffin), which
can discolor and lose fragrance over time. You will notice the
difference of Beanpod Candles from the moment you light
one.
We provide a wide (and constantly growing) assortment
of more than 70 fragrances. When you see the Real Soy logo on our
labels, it is a symbol that you are purchasing the highest quality
soy candle available on the market today.
Reproduction Primative Furniture From
Keystone Country Furniture out of Lancaster
County Pennsylvania and
The Olde Look - Handmade and Handforged out of York
“Keystone Country Furniture” is hand made
in our shop in Adams County Pennsylvania. Each piece is individually
hand-crafted of random width kiln-dried eastern white pine. We
strive to achieve the appearance of the early primitive Shaker
and Country styles. We use wide planks as were used then, but
our construction method allows natural movement of the wood to
occur without causing excessive checking and damage. Expansion
and contraction of the wood is normal and expected. As in the
original furniture of the period, naturally occurring knots and
faults are left in the wood to preserve the authentic appearance.
This is part of the uniqueness of the collection and gives each
piece its own character. Keystone Country Furniture is durable
and built to last for generations with no special care. It may
be washed with mild soap and water or waxed occasionally with
a good quality furniture polish or wax. Every piece of original
“keystone country furniture” is signed and dated… Pieces available
include Bedrooms, Bookcases, Chairs, Dining Rooms/Kitchens, Home
Office, Living Room/Den, Miscellaneous and Tables
